For the past 15 years, the ACT has been a required test for all juniors. However, due to a change in state regulations, the ACT is no longer used as our state assessment. As a result, it will not be administered during the school day as in previous years and is no longer a required exam for juniors. Students who wish to take the ACT must register for a national test date.

Since testing requirements have shifted significantly post-COVID, there is no single recommendation on whether a national assessment would benefit your child. To assist with this decision, we have attached a two-page flyer outlining common national assessments, their purposes, and how they may impact post-secondary opportunities. While many colleges no longer require these tests for admission, ACT scores may still be used for program placement. Additionally, the ACT, ACT WorkKeys, and ASVAB play a role in qualifying for the ND State Scholarship, with details included in the flyer.

The second page of the flyer provides test dates and registration procedures for juniors interested in taking one of these exams. Counselors have already shared this information with all junior students, so your child should be familiar with the details as you discuss testing options together.

Lastly, Bismarck High School will reimburse the cost of one exam (ACT or WorkKeys) for juniors. Details on the reimbursement process will be shared in mid-April, a few weeks after the April 5th national test date. If you’re having trouble paying for the ACT test, the ACT Fee Waiver Program can help. See your counselor for more information.
