Physical Education Mission Statement

Values of Physical Education
The purpose of the 9-12 physical education program at Bismarck High School is to provide students with instruction that enables them to value and participate in healthy lifestyles by meeting the national, state and local physical education standards. Along with physical activities the program also provides a comprehensive, progressive plan for social development, decision-making, and problem solving.

Educational Approach
Diverse teaching methods allow students to explore cooperative activities as well as a variety of competitive levels. Individual goal setting and creative activities help students to reach and exceed standards.

Curricular Focus
The curricular focus of the Bismarck High School physical education is lifetime activities. Individual, dual sports, team sports and off campus activities including bowling, broomball, YMCA, golf and sand volleyball are available to the students.

Student Focus
Students set goals that will provide opportunities to participate in a wide variety of chosen activities. A variety of formative assessment is used. Students are encouraged to discover themselves and strive for personal excellence by working to achieve goals individually and in groups.

Outcomes and Goals
The Bismarck High School physical education program is intellectually, socially and physically challenging within a supportive environment. Assess to information on health, leisure, recreation, competitive activities, and career opportunities are woven into the curriculum.

The benefits of making smart choices for a healthy lifestyle
  • Helps build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints.
  • Helps control weight, build lean muscle, and reduce fat.
  • Prevents or delays the development of high blood pressure and helps reduce blood pressure in some adolescents with hypertension.
  • Moderate amounts of daily physical activity are recommended for people of all ages. This amount can be obtained in longer sessions of moderately intense activities, such as brisk walking for 30 minutes, or in shorter sessions of more intense activities, such as jogging or playing basketball for 15-20 minutes.
